Spring pretties

New goodies at Revolve, and I'm surprised to find myself oohing and ahhing over the dresses rather than the denim! Never the girliest of girls, I own one dress and dozens of jeans; one pair of heels lost in my stinky cupboard amongst acres of Converse canvas and leather boots. Perhaps it's the bright beauty of spring - I'd dragged my Lomo cameras out of their boxes today for the first time in ages, inspired by the shocking pink oleanders and crimson bottlebrushes - but I'm really loving these unique dresses.

This too shall pass..

Purple Reign..

My YSL Medium Downtown has arrived, and it's utterly gorgeous!

The size isn't as big as I'd expected - it's just perfect really - and the quality and attention to detail on the bag is amazing. I love the suede lining at the main opening, and the gusseted front pocket with those shiny snap studs. The buffalo leather is smooth and strong without being too heavy, and with a bit of use I can see it softening into a glorious smooshy puddle of leather. The dustbag is the most luxurious I've seen - satin with a fleecey lining, it reminds me of a boxer's gown! Despite it's larger size and deep box base the bag slouches lovely against the body when carried even when empty, and more so of course with items inside.

This one's definitely a keeper!

Model Street Style

With all the various Fashion Weeks now over from around the world, there's plenty of new footage to drool over, but my favourite images as usual are not from the catwalks. I much prefer checking out street style of the fashion pack, both show attendees and participants, though especially the latter..

Since we mostly see models through the eyes of others - the photographer's viewfinder, the stylist's concepts, the makeup artist's mask - it's refreshing to see them just as themselves, unposed and showing their own personality and style. Given that they live and work at the hub of the ever-turning wheel of the fashion industry, constantly exposed to the latest trends and with clear insight into the designers' and editors' take on these, it's inevitable that they should have a big headstart in developing their own style and I love seeing their interpretations of each current season's look. Being models of course they can usually* make even a potato sack look good, so these backstage and street shots are almost small editorials, a collage of one look by each model! It's fabulous to watch a model's street style over the course of the four main Fashion Weeks and to pick out her general style and favourite items.. there are a few with some amazing handbag and leather jacket collections that I'll try to feature!

* I did say usually.. I hope you'll forgive me for not posting any of Laura Hollins' creations!

LEGGINGS!

Good God, these were everywhere. Black and shiny, black ruffled Rats, black and matte, black leather.. black leggings were definitely a theme, as shown at this run-through for Giles Deacon's NY show!

Last of the Louis Lust

Pretty much the only Louis Vuitton bags I'm loving at the moment are the Keepall, Carryall, and Neverfull.. now tell me, can you pick the theme here? Big and utilitarian, practical and simple - if it looks like it belongs in overhead storage, or full of books in a field with the Coppolas, it's for me! But as great as those three are they are not perfect for me, and despite all the near-misses I've tried, LV just don't seem to have nailed the perfect bag for me yet.

I'd like a bag that's a slouchy and shoulderable (like Neverfull GM) or that has both short and long straps (like Palermo, or Keepall), but is organised inside with pockets and compartments, like Monogramouflage Trellis. The Trellis itself is gorgeous - unlike it's many critics I really don't mind the mono'flage, and love how soft and casual it is - but I'd really like a regular monogram bag to suit me. I guess this is why I've shifted from LV and back to leather bags like the YSL and Miu Miu ones I've been looking at of late.. until LV make The One I don't want to pass time trying others that aren't going to suit, especially when the exchange rate makes this an (even more) expensive endeavour. So with handbags out of the running and no current need for any accessory item, were I to choose anything of an LV store right now it would be a piece of luggage.

Luggage is the very foundation upon which Louis Vuitton is built, and whilst I'm not exactly jetset at the moment I'd really love to own a great set of LV luggage that would last me a lifetime and bear the eventual patina of a well-travelled life. I'm not talking $$$ steamer trunks and travelling wardrobes either, as my head is in the clouds neither physically nor figuratively; but versatile bags that both of us can get a lot of use out of, and that can also earn their keep by fulfilling double-duty as gym or work bags. After all, if you're spending that kind of sum on a bag you'd want it to not only last forever but to also allow you more options and opporunity to get the most for your money.. My SA at LV was telling me she makes the most of her luggage piece every day by using it as a work bag, despite it's travel-oriented suitcase design. She pulls a small LV wheelie carryon case behind her to work and back with her laptop and files inside - no sore shoulder or crook back from heavy bags - and when she travels it of course fills it's original purpose with style. The heavy duty rollers and extendable handles will never give out, though even were the piece to suffer some damage or failure there is always the ressurance of it being sent straight back to Paris for repairs. Despite the original layout of perhaps $2k, when considered on a cost-per-wear basis (thanks, Voguettes!) the math is really looking good.

So I've been idly thinking of getting a Carryall and Keepall as double-duty travel bags.. the Carryall would be perfect for everyday work use as it could eat my laptop and daily accessories, as well as my eternal reams of magazines and books, whilst also being the right size to make a fabulous weekender. The Keepall 45 with strap would be my all-rounder, perfect for travel, work and gym - even full with daily needs it would still fit my gym kit in there with ease, shoes included - and with it's messenger strap makes a great large city or day tripping bag, as shown in this ad from louisvuitton.com.

As for a Louis Vuitton handbag, a Neverfull GM upon the shoulder is as close as I'll get. It 's ginormous yet has no internal organisation, meaning all my things will end up in a jumble inside, but I still love it. It's all Leibovitz's fault..

Y-Sartoria-List

I'm still captivated by YSL bags, but in this it seems I am not alone. Despite both Muse and Downtown lines now being a few seasons old they are still very popular and selling out in new colours, and perhaps most telling is that those in the know - the fashion pack - can't get enough of them. Doing just as well thank you are the newer lines, the Rive Gauche, Besace Messenger and the Easy, and so here are a bunch of shots from The Sartorialist, from backstage at the recent Fashion Weeks, and the obligatory paparazzi shots of various celebs with their fave YSL.

Creating Beauty: Pippi's precious pretties!

I have another wonderful Etsy find to share, this time from a lovely tPF'er with an amazing talent for creating beauty.

Pippi of Idaho is a lass with a fine eye for beauty in many things - handbags, jewelry and trinkets included - but whilst the appreciation of such things is a widespread indulgence, the ability to create something of real charm and originality from scratch is a far rarer and more valuable skill.

When not hurtling along desert trails on her mountain bike, Pippi spends her days combining gold and silver wire with gemstones and imagination to fashion exquisite jewellery of wonderful variety and uniqueness. From intricately coiled bracelets and delicate seahorse pendants to a stunning garnet necklace and an incredible rosary a few years in the making, she offers something for everyone, as well as a bespoke service to create something truly personal.

Keep up with Pippi's latest news and designs on her Blogspot blog, or visit her on Etsy at one of her two stores - Pippi Jewelry, and The Happy Magpie, her emporium of eclectic goodies and cute knick-knacks. Purse Forum members are offered a wonderful discount on jewellery pieces, and Pippi's kind heart extends beyond sharing with her friends - she also donates proceeds from the sales of some special pieces to causes such as the Tibetan Healing Fund and the Woodland Firefighters Foundation!

Of all Pippi's gorgeous things I think I love her new jewelled lizard best. The first time she has made such an item, it has turned out amazing, and I love it's jewelled eyes, cute fingers and lizard scale tummy! For all it's intricacy and detail it is extremely well priced, especially considering how much time it's creation must have taken. With the world full of cookie-cutter jewellery pieces and everyone searching for something unique, this little friend and Pippi's other designs are a refreshing antidote to Tiffanyitis!

I.. like.. big.. BAGS, and I cannot lie!

My name is Frankie, and I am a ginormophile. To me size does matter, bigger is better, and girth - as many women have always suspected - is everything. Now drag your minds outta the gutter people, I'm talking purses, not penii here.. though the general gist of the matter is the same!

Now my plus-sized preference is something that has grown on me over the past couple of years, and not solely because I like to keep a whole lotta junk in my trunk, though on work days especially this can be true. I simply love the look of large bags on people, be they tall or short, thick or thin; and I love too how versatile they are. A well-designed large bag should look fabulous whether full or empty, and in a practical sense is especially suited for trans-seasonal months when you might want to keep a cardi handy, and for winter when a larger bag is best for balancing out a large coat and a heavier outfit. It's the perfect everyday bag to take you from work during the week to shopping on the weekend, and can double as a fantastic carryon or even as an overnighter. It will save you the hassles of carrying many shopping bags at once when out and about, allowing you to merrily shop away without your look being spoiled by ugly plastic bags through which may be seen all you've bought, and in doing so plays it's part in reducing unecessary plastic waste at the same time! All the while you can be reassured that the Big Bag will perform it's many functions with style, whilst simultaneously, according to the odd fashion mag report or stylist tip, taking pounds of baggage off you.

The slimming powers of a large bag has been a long-held superstition of celebrities, with the many millions of paparazzi shots of lollipop-thin starlets struggling beneath an enormous tote clear testament to this. Just think of one of those Olsen trolls (they both look the same to me) with her XL Givenchy Nightingale and omnipresent Starbucks Grande, Lindsay with her reversible YSL tote or orange Birkin, Nicole Richie with any one of her dozens of Balenciagas, or Katie Holmes one-upping Posh's Birkin collection with her oversized Hermes HAC. [Come to think of it though, poor pale Katie was probably at that moment making her escape from Tom's tyrannical clutches, and the bag's a clever ruse with which to smuggle out Siri before her brain-washing is complete.]

Kidnap'n'conspiracy theories aside, it takes only a brief flip through your closest trash mag to observe the ongoing love affair that is the celebrity & humungabag marriage, with even the men getting in on the action. Whilst the validity of any slimming effects might be in the eye of the beholder, I expect another reason for their popularity might be a simple extension of the 'more is more' ethos that celebrity seems to embrace. The thinnest figure, the newest hairdo, the best plastic surgeon and the biggest IT bag seem pre-requisite for any who live their lives backlit by the blinding flashes of the paparazzi, and those big bags are charged with the responsibility of not only holding their belongings (or hiding their children), but with also sheilding baby bumps, hiding bruised faces post- lunchtime lift, and, simply, showing off. These celebs seem to go through new bags faster than Sienna does boyfriends, and upon the release of each designer's new season there's an almighty shuffle as the old are cast aside for the next hot thing, with the only true constant being that the bag be BIG.

As for me, well, since the only flashbulbs in my life are upon the work trucks, and since too I'm rather a long way from fashion's epicenter both geographically and culturally, I simply buy what I like when I find it. Whilst this generally sees me cruising along a few seasons behind the times as that's about when I can start affording them, I am consoled however that most of the big bags I love are still currently in production, albeit of course in a new line of shades or leathers according to 'this season's colour'! Mind you, tagging along behind is a fine thing in itself - I'm never embroiled in the gold rush to grab what's new before it goes, I don't pay ridiculous amounts of money on a bag that might not take off and will hit the sale stands within a few weeks, and I don't run the risk of purchasing a bag in one colour only to then see a similar but much nicer shade released next season!

The main objects of my desire have lately been YSL bags, particularly the Downtown and Muse. When the Muse was first released I was quite ho-hum about it.. it seemed a great size, but quite plain, though considering I was all about Chloe at the time this impression isn't too surprising! Since then however it's really grown on me, and the latest pocket Downtown even more so. I love the thick, smooshy buffalo leather used, and love too that they're bags sturdy enough for me to stuff full and yet be worry-free. Needing to baby any bag is bad enough, let alone when said baby is half the size you are, so any big bag I feel needs to have big bones to match and these certainly meet that need. I now have one of each on the way, an Oversized Muse in Teak and the Medium Downtown in Purple, both brand-new and beautiful! Whilst perhaps the product of the recent purple craze in accessories, that Downtown is a shade rich and vibrant enough to last well beyond the usual use-by date of seasonal colours, and I can't wait to add it to my wardrobe. Adding a new colour of any fashion item is a great way to look at what you have in different ways, as accommodating such a strong shade as purple (of which I to date own nothing) in such a large piece can really shake you out of the habitual 'usual' outfits everyone has. Now that I've discovered the fabulous Downtown style, I'd love to one day find myself one of the earlier styles as pictured above, which were made of soft, thick deerskin and lined in luxurious suede. A simpler style than the pocket version, their best feature is that matte grained leather which by all accounts melts into a puddle of smooshiness when not unsupported.

Having thusly fallen in love with two of YSL's bags, I've naturally turned my attention to checking out other members of the family. The Rive Gauche is perhaps one of the most perfect and versatile larger bags around, featuring both shoulderable handles and a longer messenger strap. Similarly sized is the Besace Messenger, which too is current line and also selling in two different styles and a handful of colours. Although smaller than the Muse and Downtown bags, these are both still of very decent size, and are currently enjoying huge popularity. Still lacking a grey bag in my collection after moving on the Minkoff MAM, I'm drooling nover the grey glace Rive Gauche and the Croco Embossed Besace pictured.

Whilst the four already mentioned are hugely popular, perhaps newest and hottest right now from YSL is their Easy bag. An understated satchel with the trademark 'Y' upon it's front and shoulderable handles, it comes in enough colours and sizes to fit any hole in your bag collection, and has already been snapped upon the shoulders of numerous celebs (including every designer's dream endorsement - Kate Moss). The zippered satchel comes in a couple of sizes, small and medium, though as with the Downtown line they're overgrown for their names - the medium is at least as large as the Large Muse! Whilst the satchels are cute I'm especially loving the enormous Shopper version.. reminiscent of the fabled Givenchy Nightingale, this big softy has big handles and a long strap, and comes in both this gorgeous soft tan shade and black. Currently US$2000, it'll be an even longer wait than usual for the price to drop with the feeble Australian dollar on life support right now, but meanwhile at least I'll have my other YSLs to keep me occupied!

STOP PRESS: Kate Moss cuts hair! (zomg)

Ring the paparazzi and halt the printers: Kate Moss has had a haircut.

Gone is the mousey shoulder length 'do, often in need of a good brushing; and in it's place, a razored platinum bob that's dropped not only inches from her locks but also years from her looks. I think it looks fabulous, but do wonder what contracted name the gossip columns will inevitably bestow upon the style.. will it be the Kob, or the Mob

What does YOUR bag do?

Why should I ask, you might wonder? Because My Bag Cares.

I've been searching around for awhile for a simple canvas tote to roll up within my larger bags for epic shopping trips - the fact that said epic shopping trips are a thing of the past post Black October Credit Crunch notwithstanding - and whilst there are unbleached canvas totes aplenty out there on offer by commercial companies such as Chip Chop (I never thought them funny, did you?), and I'm Not a Plastic Bag (too expensive, and again, commercial), I simply hadn't found one that really stole my heart. To date I've been using various magazine freebie totes, but with nothing else really available that was both functional, enviro-friendly, and cheap (other than Coles green totes) I'd been more or less stumped.

Then on the tPF Marketplace one day cropped up this beauty - the My Bag Cares reuseable tote. The bag is gorgeous, simple, both enormously functional and just outright enormous, and has a fantastic ethos - for every tote bought, a tree is planted in conjunction with the Arbor Day Foundation. Finally, carbon trading for my shopping trips!

The lady selling this bag had spares left over from her wedding - she'd had the wonderful and thoughtful idea of purchasing a bunch of them as gifts for her wedding attendees, and reported them a massive hit. Now that I have one too I'm utterly in love with both the bag and the idea, and will be purchasing a dozen or so of these myself next month as Christmas gifts! Why waste wrapping paper on gifts when you can give them out with these bags? The bags come with a special card upon which you can note for whom the tree is planted (and to whom the bag and gift goes!), and I think would be wonderful and unique way to hand out your gifts come Christmas time. Mind you, the bags themselves would alone make wonderful gifts - I'm certainly over the moon with mine!

Found - Natasha Poly style cardi!

Revolve updated, and upon spotting this Striped Blanket Coat from Jet Tee I was reminded instantly of this shot of Natasha Poly in a similar style from a couple of seasons back. Very cute, the perfect trans-seasonal piece, and only $136 @ Revolve.
